Weathering the Middle Miles of the Survivor Marathon

We're near the halfway point of the NFL season, and if you're still alive in your Survivor pool, congratulations. You've cleared mile 13 of this grueling marathon. Your legs are starting to burn. You're looking ahead at the remaining weeks and thinking, Are we there yet. Welcome to the hardest part of the race.

Every week requires research, deliberation, and anxiety. You've been tracking team availability, gaming out Thanksgiving scenarios, and second-guessing decisions you made back in September. It's draining. We’re here to help you straighten up and get through.

    Take Stock of Your Tank

Pull up your list of remaining teams, and compare it to the field by looking on the Teams table or the Map. Do you still have Detroit? Buffalo? Denver? If so, give yourself a gold star. Each of these has already been burned by the majority of the field, so just having them in reserve gives you shine.

The Thanksgiving gauntlet is looming large, and everyone still playing is toiling over the holiday plans. Chunky mashed potatoes or smooth? Multiple types of sweet potato casserole? We want to be so At Peace with the Survivor landscape on that day that we are able to contemplate such dilemmas. This is where the multilayered mapping comes in. You want to be charting popular paths. Then finding some divergent routes. Look at the most common entry combos in your contest. Can you identify a spot for a calculated risk?

Going Out Early Doesn't Mean You Played Survivor Wrong

Let's revisit some wisdom covered in Survivor Tailgate a few weeks back: going out in Week 5 or Week 15 produces the same outcome. Zero dollars. It is painful to bust out early, because you have to cope with FOMO when others are still playing, but the financial result is identical. This might sound depressing, but it's actually liberating. If you want to win the money, and not just survive as long as possible, you have to be willing to make plays that differ from the consensus. Sometimes that means taking on more risk earlier to set yourself up for a juicy scoop later.

Find Other Wins If Need Be

If you do bust out before Thanksgiving, go ahead and get sad or mad for a short time, but then find the silver lining. You get that time back every week. Maybe there's a vacation you can actually enjoy without side-monitoring infographics and injury reports. Being eliminated doesn't erase the strategic skill you demonstrated. It just means the odds didn't break your way this time.

Nobody wants their season to end. But playing not to lose is different from playing to win, and the middle miles are a moment to firmly decide which game you're playing. The sharp play that didn't work out wasn't a mistake. Think of it as the cost of doing business when you're trying to beat thousands of other entries one of these years.
